The Other Lagos – Portugal’s Algarve

Think of Lagos and Nigeria, Africa probably comes to mind. However, there is another Lagos that you might want to think about. The Algarve in southern Portugal has an old and rich history. Lagos has been a thriving coastal city for centuries. It was in the 15th century that Henry the Navigator built his ships in Lagos and sailed from there on his voyages around the oceans.
While it would be logical to think the name Lagos is linked to Lagos, Nigeria, it is in fact derived from a Roman name 'Lacobriga'. Lagos is though the site of the first market in Portugal dealing in the trade of African slaves.
There are some distinctive cultural influences of the early settlers and if you look up at the rooftops you will notice the ornate chimney tops that are inspired by the Moors minarets.
In the summer, Lagos is filled with tourists strolling along the promenade, the local shops, visiting the museum, or, just taking in the sights and entertainment at a summer market of fair. Flights within Europe can be very cheap. Put Lagos on your list!
